New Delhi, July 3: Amber Heard’s attorneys have urged the Fairfax court to set out the judgement against her or order a new trial less than a month after she lost her defamation case against ex-husband Johnny Depp. Amber’s legal team reportedly stated that there is ‘no proof’ to support the $10 million in damages Johnny has been awarded, according to reports.
Amber was sued by Johnny Depp in 2018 for defaming him in a Washington Post piece where she identified herself as a victim of domestic violence. When he dubbed Amber a liar, she counter-sued him, alleging that he had defamed her. During their two years of marriage, both parties claimed the other had abused them at home. Amber was found guilty of defamation on all three counts following the six-week trial. Johnny was likewise convicted on one count but found not guilty on the other two.
Amber’s legal team contends in a court document that Johnny’s team “proceeded purely on a defamation by implication argument, discarding any claims that Ms Heard’s words were genuinely incorrect,” according to Court House News. Additionally, it was asserted in the brief that Amber was not aware of the headline of her 2018 article.
The motion also questioned Amber’s damages, claiming that they were excessively high. Amber was required to pay $5 million in punitive damages and $10 million in compensatory damages, but the judge only required Amber to pay the maximum amount allowed by law—$350,000—for the latter. However, Johnny was required to give Amber a total of $2 million.
