Amit Shah, Kharge greet people of Sikkim on Statehood Day

New Delhi, May 16: Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, wished Sikkim’s residents a happy Statehood Day on Tuesday and prayed for the state’s future growth.

“Heartfelt wishes to the people of Sikkim on their statehood day. Sikkim is a gem in northeastern India with its hardworking people contributing profusely to the nation’s culture and economy. May the state continue to prosper in the years to come,” Shah tweeted.

On the occasion of Sikkim’s Statehood Day earlier in the day, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also expressed his best wishes to the locals.

Taking to Twitter, he said, “On Sikkim Statehood Day, we extend our warmest greetings to the people of this beautiful state, blessed with natural beauty and rich cultural diversity.”

“In 1975, Sikkim merged with India and became our 22nd state. We wish you unhindered peace, progress and prosperity,” Kharge tweeted.

Sikkim became India’s 22nd state on May 16, 1975. It celebrates the event annually with a holiday and a number of events.

A constitutional amendment was signed on May 15, 1975, by the country’s then-president Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, and Sikkim became India’s 22nd state the following day.
