Port Blair: Andaman and Nicobar police are seeking assistance from Elon Musk’s Starlink as part of an investigation into a historic drug seizure involving methamphetamine worth $4.25 billion. The smugglers reportedly used Starlink’s satellite internet to navigate Indian waters undetected, marking a first in such cases.
Massive Seizure of Meth
Last week, Andaman authorities intercepted a Myanmar boat carrying over 6,000 kg (13,000 lb) of methamphetamine, detaining six Myanmar nationals. This marks the largest drug bust in the region, with the contraband estimated to have a market value of ₹360 billion.
Starlink’s Role Under Investigation
Police officer Hargobinder S. Dhaliwal, leading the probe, revealed that smugglers used Starlink’s satellite internet to bypass traditional communication channels, creating a Wi-Fi hotspot to coordinate their journey. Authorities plan to request data from Starlink, including details about the device’s purchase and usage history.
“They operated directly with satellite connectivity, bypassing all legal channels,” Dhaliwal said, adding that the Starlink Mini device enabled their navigation from Myanmar to Indian waters.
Starlink’s Coverage in Indian Waters
While Starlink provides satellite internet in international waters, its operation in India’s territorial waters requires government approval. This case has raised concerns about the potential misuse of such technology.
Meth Trafficking on the Rise
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), maritime methamphetamine trafficking has surged, with seizures in East and Southeast Asia hitting a record high of 190 tons in 2023. India has become both a transit and destination market for meth originating from Myanmar.
Expanding Probe
The Andaman police are investigating possible links to local and international syndicates involved in the smuggling network. This case also highlights the growing challenges posed by advanced technology in combating drug trafficking.
