New Delhi: The Tirupati Laddu row took a dramatic turn as Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and film actor Prakash Raj engaged in a heated exchange on social media. The Janasena chief, Kalyan, criticized the film industry for “making light” of sensitive issues related to religion, while Prakash Raj questioned Kalyan’s stance on secularism.
Kalyan’s Purification Ritual and Response to Critics
Pawan Kalyan, while performing a purification ritual as part of his 11-day ‘Prayaschitta Diksha’ in Vijayawada, expressed his dismay at Prakash Raj‘s comments. He emphasized the importance of defending Sanatana Dharma and addressing issues like food adulteration in religious practices.
“I respect you, Prakash Raj, but I do not understand why you are criticizing me for standing up for Hinduism. Should I not speak out against attacks on Sanatana Dharma?” Kalyan said, accusing the actor of questioning his religious integrity. He further criticized the film industry for downplaying the seriousness of religious issues, stating, “Sanatana Dharma is of utmost importance, and if similar issues arose in other religions, there would be widespread agitation.”
Prakash Raj’s Reply
Responding to Kalyan’s comments on X (formerly Twitter), Prakash Raj expressed surprise over the misunderstanding, stating, “What I have said and what you have misinterpreted is surprising. I am currently shooting abroad and will respond to your questions when I return.”
Earlier, Prakash Raj had urged Kalyan to focus on finding the culprits behind the alleged use of animal fat in the Tirupati laddus instead of spreading communal apprehension at a national level. Raj’s criticism further fueled the ongoing row between the two prominent figures.
The Tirupati Laddu Controversy
The controversy stems from allegations that animal fat was found in the Tirupati laddus, leading to outrage among Hindu devotees. Pawan Kalyan has called for the establishment of a ‘Sanatana Dharma Rakshana Board’ to address issues surrounding temple management, dharmic practices, and food adulteration in religious offerings.
“Our government is committed to taking stringent action on these findings. But this raises broader concerns about the desecration of temples and the need for a national-level discussion,” Kalyan remarked on X.
In response, Prakash Raj emphasized that Kalyan, as Deputy Chief Minister, should focus on resolving the issue within the state rather than sensationalizing it nationwide.
Political and Religious Implications
This exchange has sparked a wider debate on religious sentiments, governance, and the role of public figures in addressing communal issues. With communal tensions already simmering across India, many are closely watching how this debate between a film industry veteran and a political leader unfolds.
The Tirupati Laddu row, now entwined with political and religious overtones, continues to dominate public discourse, with both leaders expected to take further action in the coming days.
