New Delhi, Oct 11: The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 shook northwest Afghanistan on Wednesday. According to the research institute, the tremors were felt at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles).
No immediate reports of human fatalities or property damage as a result of the recent tremors were made.
This occurs days after numerous quakes on Saturday devastated the northwest of the city of Herat, killing over 2,000 people and destroying thousands of homes.
The 6.3 magnitude earthquakes that occurred on Saturday were among the deadliest in the globe this year, second only to the 50,000-plus fatalities caused by the quakes in Turkey and Syria.
On Tuesday, Mullah Saiq, the spokesperson for Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), verified that the number of people affected by the seismic activity on Saturday had risen to over 4,000 casualties. Additionally, he mentioned that nearly 2,000 residences in approximately 20 villages had suffered complete collapse.
