Jamshedpur, Oct 22: A 42-year-old constable who is posted as an armourer in Seraikela Police Line sustained a gunshot injury while cleaning a rifle at the police line on Friday afternoon.

The armourer identified as Dilip Kumar Singh sustained the injury in the chest and has been rushed to Seraikela Sadar Hospital. From there the victim was shifted to Tata Main Hospital by covering a distance of 35 kms.

OC, Seraikela thana, Manohar Kumar confirmed that a constable was injured due to an accidental fire from a rifle at the Seraikela Police Line armoury.

“The constable who is an armourer was injured as a rifle accidentally went off while he was cleaning it. The injured is now undergoing treatment at the Tata Main Hospital where his condition is described as out of danger, ” said Kumar.

The OC could not say exactly which type of rifle that the armourer was cleaning and whether it was logical to get a loaded rifle cleaned.

Sergeant major, Seraikela, Dilip Paswan who visited the place of occurrence said he could not talk to the constable as by the time he reached the spot the victim had already been taken to the Tata Main Hospital.

“Under no condition, a loaded pistol or rifle is cleaned by any armourer.  But in today’s incident, the armourer Dilip Kumar Singh was injured while cleaning a loaded rifle, ” said the  Sergeant major.

Paswan said deputy superintendent of police (Headquarters) Chandan Kumar will get the matter investigated.
