New Delhi, Nov.12: According to a report by Bar and Bench, the Indian Army told the Supreme Court on Friday that it was ready to issue Permanent Commission to 11 women officers in accordance with prior orders after the supreme court threatened contempt actions.
The move came after a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna cautioned Army officials that if they did not award PC to women officers, the high court would launch contempt proceedings. The top court was considering a contempt suit filed by 11 officers accusing the Army of disobeying the court’s orders.
The Army’s Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain then informed the court that it had decided to issue Permanent Commission to the 11 officers and that it will seek additional instructions.
“We applaud the army’s fair stance in resolving all remaining concerns connected to female SSC officers,” the SC remarked later.
The Supreme Court recently ordered that 39 women officers in the Indian Army be given permanent commissions on or before November 1, 2021. It directed the central government to provide PC to female officers who had been denied it due to unequal application of fitness requirements.
The Delhi High Court’s 2010 judgment allowing women Short Service Commission Officers to be granted Permanent Commission on par with their male colleagues was upheld by the court in February 2020.
