Asansol: Youth dies in police custody, violence erupts, mob attacked police station, stone pelting, arson

The police had picked up Aman Ansari on Monday night on suspicion of theft. As soon as the news of his death in custody spread, a riot-like situation broke out in Barakar, Asansol this morning.

Kolkata: Violence erupted in West Bengal’s Asansol after a youth named Aman Ansari allegedly died in police custody. According to the information, the police had picked up Aman Ansari on the suspicion of theft on the night of Monday 5 July. As soon as the news of his death in custody spread, a riot-like situation arose in Barakar, Asansol on Tuesday morning.

The mob turned violent and pelted stones at the police station.

It is reported that the mob turned violent and pelted stones at the police station. Police cars were torched. According to ANI, Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Ajay Thakur told that 2 police officers who arrested the accused have been suspended. The investigation of this matter is going on. Locals took to the streets to protest the custodial death of 21-year-old Ansari. Apart from setting the police van on fire, the mob allegedly also hurled bombs at the police station.

Police had to fire tear gas shells

The police had to use tear gas shells and lathi-charge to control the situation. According to sources, curfew may also be imposed to remove the tension prevailing in this area, a local person has sought Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s intervention in this matter. Said that a young boy was beaten to death. We request the Chief Minister to take cognizance of the matter. We want justice.
