India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the Asia Cup 2025 final to claim the championship. However, the post-match celebration turned controversial as the Indian team returned without receiving the trophy, sparking a major dispute involving the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
Team Refuses Trophy from ACC Chief
As per protocol, the winning team should have received the trophy from ACC President Mohsin Naqvi. However, Indian players and the BCCI objected, refusing to accept the trophy from him. Naqvi is not only the ACC President but also Pakistan’s Interior Minister and PCB Chairman. Given the tense political situation between India and Pakistan, the Indian side expressed discomfort in accepting the trophy from a Pakistani government representative.
BCCI had earlier requested that the trophy be presented by the Emirates Cricket Board’s Vice-President instead of Naqvi. Ignoring the request, Naqvi carried the trophy to his hotel, intensifying the row.
BCCI’s Strong Objection
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that India is effectively at war with Pakistan and cannot accept a trophy from a leader representing the rival nation. He criticized Naqvi’s act of taking the trophy and medals to his hotel room, calling it “shocking and unacceptable.”
Saikia warned that if the matter is not resolved soon, BCCI will formally raise the issue at the ICC conference in Dubai this November. He clarified that the ACC has until October to hand over the trophy to the Indian team.
India’s Thrilling Victory
On the field, India delivered a nail-biting performance. Pakistan posted 146 runs in 20 overs after batting first. Chasing the target, India lost five wickets but managed to seal the win in the final over, securing the Asia Cup title with a 5-wicket victory.
