Assam, Oct 3: Over 800 people have been arrested as a result of a massive operation that the Assam Police initiated in the wee hours of the morning in an effort to tackle the grave problem of child marriages.
The operation, which forms part of a larger campaign spearheaded by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is designed to eradicate the practice of child marriages within the state.
Chief Minister of Assam, Himana Biswa Sarma, posted on X, “In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam Police has arrested over 800 accused persons in a special operation which began in the early hours of dawn. The number of arrests is likely to rise.”

About 5,000 people, including 15 clerics suspected of being involved in child marriages, had already been detained by the Assam Police during the early stage of this operation.
Deputy Speaker Momin lauded CM Sarma’s unwavering stance and stated that they would undertake similar efforts to combat child marriages every six months.
He expressed his optimism that Assam would be free of child marriages by 2026.
