New Delhi, Oct 3: After the passing of seven more patients, the death toll at a government hospital in the Nanded region of Maharashtra rose to 31. 15 children and 16 adults were among the hospital patients who passed away.

The Nanded District Information Office (DIO) wrote on social media “The facts related to the death of patients at Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital is as follows: 24 deaths between September 30 and October 1; seven deaths between October 1 and 2.”

“Please do not panic. A team of doctors is ready,” the post added.

Ashok Chavan, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, also provided an update on the death toll.

The authorities at Shankarrao Chavan Government Hospital explained on Monday that the fatalities resulted from a lack of medicines. The hospital’s dean further mentioned that among the 12 deceased children, there were six girls and six boys. He also noted that the twelve deceased adults had succumbed to a range of ailments, including snake bites.

He stated that although the hospital is simply a ‘tertiary-level care centre’, individuals still travel from various locations to receive care there because it is the only medical facility within a 70–80 km radius. He stated that the shortage of medicines was caused by the fact that the number of patients admitted to the hospital sometimes exceeds the institute’s budget.

Nonetheless, the hospital issued a statement on Tuesday asserting that there was an ample supply of medicine, and the patients were already in the ‘last stage’ their illnesses.

During a meeting today, the Maharashtra cabinet is set to discuss on the deaths at Nanded Hospital. A decision regarding the establishment of an inquiry committee in response to the incident may be made by the cabinet, as per a government official from Maharashtra.
