Ranchi, Sept.27: Assistant policemen, who were reinstated on a contract basis in the state are preparing to resume their protest in support of their demands. Assistant policemen have launched an indefinite strike in front of Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister’s house from Monday. The policemen from various districts across the state have been assembling at Morabadi ground since this morning. Ranchi Police has also taken precautionary measures in light of their protest. Law and order disturbances and nuisances will be dealt with sternly by the police.
According to protesting personnel, 2,500 young men and women from 12 Naxal-affected areas were engaged on a three-year contract to serve in the home district during the tenure of the former Raghubar government. There was a protest last year against the practice of being fired at the end of a contract period. The deal was then extended for another year. The contract has been extended till 2022 in the meantime. However, there has been no rise in the honorarium so far. Moreover, their service is being transferred from the home district to other districts. Inflation has risen to the point where it is difficult to support a family with ten thousand rupees.
They further said that the previous year, Minister Mithilesh Thakur visited the agitating assistant police officers. He promised that a five-person committee will be constituted soon to address their concerns. The report of the committee will be taken into consideration sympathetically. However, nothing has happened in this direction so far.
Last year, 2500 assistant policemen camped in Morabadi ground on September 12. Women and their small children had also joined the movement. On 18 September 2020, they became furious when the barricading was done. They demolished the barricading and the police used lathi charges and tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. This fight also resulted in the injuries of a large number of policemen.
