Prayagraj, March 28:  Prayagraj MP-MLA Court convicted gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and two other accused in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case, the prime witness in the BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case. Mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed was given life sentence by the MP-MLA court, as well as a 5000 rupee fine.

Seven others, including Ahmed’s brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, were acquitted in the case. Atiq Ahmed suffered yet another setback when the Supreme Court rejected his request for protection while he was being held by Uttar Pradesh police in connection with the murder of Umesh Pal. According to Ahmed, he and his family are under a real and immediate threat to their life.

Ahmed was moved from the Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat to the Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj under heavy security precautions in advance of the court hearing scheduled for today in the 17-year-old kidnapping case.
