Dhanbad, Nov 16: Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) Jharkhand chapter on the directive of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) today started a month-long awareness programme for the prevention of diabetes in students across the state.

In association with Dhanbad Action Group (DAG), the RSSDI Jharkhand chapter kick-started the programme at JK Sinha Memorial International School Baramuri, Dhanbad during the prayer period. On the occasion, RSSDI Jharkhand chapter chairman Dr NK Singh made the students aware of superfoods to combat diabetes and said that eating them can protect them from the disease.

While suggesting the students avoid Pizza food culture, Dr Singh asked them to eat almonds and cinnamon on a priority basis. “10 almonds a day would sharp the brain and increase memory power,” he pointed out.

Dr Singh said that the young generation is falling fast into the trap of diabetes. Wrong food selection, lack of physical activities and pollution have emerged as the main factors of rising cases of diabetes among the youth between 20-30 years.

As per the IDF directive, all RSSDI chapters have to carry out an awareness campaign in schools of their respective states from World Diabetes Day (November 14).

RSSDI Jharkhand chapter started the campaign today (November 16) due to the statehood function on November 15. “All district chapters have been directed to carry out the programme during prayer period in schools when all students are available,” said Dr Singh.

The students were also suggested to avoid carrying water in plastic bottles. Dr Singh advised them to keep water in glass bottles as plastic bottles generate dangerous chemical (Bisphenol A) which is injurious to health. He suggested that students should avoid these bottles and containers not only in school but even at their houses.

Harsh Pratap Singh and Rishav Manaswi also addressed the students and advised students for doing physical activities as it is the best method for the prevention of diabetes.

School principal Dr Jagdish Rao provided all facilities to RSSDI for holding an awareness programme and appreciated Dr Singh and his team for valuable tips to students.
