New Delhi: In a major leadership shift ahead of the IPL 2025 season, Delhi Capitals have appointed Axar Patel as their new captain. The franchise announced the decision on Friday, entrusting the all-rounder with the responsibility of leading the team in their quest for a comeback after a disappointing last season.
Axar Patel’s IPL Journey and Performance
Axar, 31, has been a key player for Delhi Capitals since 2019, consistently delivering with both bat and ball. Over his seven-season stint, he has played 150 IPL matches, amassing 1,653 runs at an impressive strike rate of 131, along with 123 wickets at a 7.28 economy rate.
For Delhi Capitals, he has featured in 82 matches, scoring 967 runs and taking 62 wickets at an economy rate of 7.09.
Leadership Transition at Delhi Capitals
With Rishabh Pant stepping down from captaincy, Axar Patel takes over a new challenge, marking his first leadership role in the IPL. Expressing his gratitude, Axar said:
“It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I’m deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me.”
He emphasized his growth within the franchise and confidence in leading the side:
“I’ve grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward. Our coaches and scouts have done a superb job at the mega auction by putting together a balanced and robust squad which has tremendous potential.”
Delhi Capitals’ Preparations for IPL 2025
Delhi Capitals will begin their preparatory camp in Delhi before traveling to Visakhapatnam for their first two matches. The team will assemble on March 17 and 18, featuring key players like KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Mitchell Starc.
KL Rahul’s Role in Leadership
KL Rahul, who has previously captained Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, is expected to be one of Axar’s key advisors. However, there is speculation that Rahul might miss the initial matches as he and his wife, Athiya Shetty, are expecting their first child.
With Axar Patel at the helm, Delhi Capitals aim for a resurgent season, hoping to clinch their maiden IPL title.
