New Delhi, Oct 29: A day after violent protests shook the nation’s capital, Dhaka, a prominent leader of the main opposition party in Bangladesh was placed under arrest by police on Sunday.

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Police detained Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

According to Shamsuddin Didar, a press wing member of the BNP chairperson, Alamgir was taken into custody from his home in the posh Gulshan neighbourhood of Dhaka at approximately 9.30 AM.

During the operation, hard drives from Alamgir’s home were also seized by the police. It was confirmed by Hafiz Al Asad, DB Additional Deputy Commissioner (Gulshan Division), that Alamgir was brought in for interrogation.

Law enforcement officials have also surrounded the homes of other BNP leaders, such as Mirza Abbas in Shahjahanpur and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the Standing Committee, in addition to detaining Alamgir.

The incident occurred one day after violent altercations broke out during anti-government protests in Dhaka, injuring over 200 people, including security officials. One police constable lost his life as a result of the clash.

Under the leadership of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, the BNP had arranged a large-scale gathering, calling for the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down in order to establish a non-party interim government and ensure unbiased elections.

According to the BNP, one of its youth wing members lost his life in the clashes that occurred on Saturday. These demonstrations represent a fresh stage in the opposition’s actions, and they come as the general election is scheduled to take place within the next three months. Despite presiding over a period of swift economic expansion, Hasina’s administration is facing allegations of corruption and violations of human rights.
