Washington: Despite widespread Democratic support for Kamala Harris as the party’s new US Presidential candidate, former President Barack Obama has yet to endorse her. According to reports from the New York Post, Obama is hesitant because he believes Harris cannot defeat Republican candidate Donald Trump.
“Obama is very upset because he knows she can’t win,” a Biden family source told the New York Post. The source further criticized Harris’s competence, citing her role as border czar and controversial statements about migrant health insurance. “She cannot navigate the landmines that are ahead of her,” the source added.
Reportedly, Obama’s strategy involved urging President Joe Biden to step aside, with actor George Clooney’s article advocating for Biden’s exit being part of the plan. Obama had hoped for Arizona Senator Mark Kelly to lead the Democratic ticket at the upcoming National Convention.
However, NBC News reported on Thursday that Obama plans to endorse Harris soon. Despite his public silence, Obama has privately supported Harris’s candidacy and has maintained regular contact with her. Discussions are underway to arrange joint campaign appearances, although no dates have been set.
Meanwhile, US Senator Ted Cruz predicted that former First Lady Michelle Obama might replace Biden on the Democratic ticket, following Biden’s criticized debate performance against Trump. Cruz claimed there was an “80% chance” of this happening, though Michelle Obama has not shown any interest in joining the race.
As the Democratic campaign continues, the potential endorsement from Obama could play a crucial role in unifying the party and strengthening Harris’s position against Trump.
