New Delhi, Jan 28: A seven-person committee was formed by Delhi University today to look into the uproar caused by the screening of a BBC documentary about the Gujarat riots in 2002 outside the Arts Faculty building.

Yogesh Singh, the vice-chancellor, has been ordered to receive the committee’s report by 5 p.m. on January 30. The committee is presided over by DU Proctor Rajini Abbi. The committee has been established, according to a letter from the institution, to uphold discipline and preserve law and order on campus.

“The Committee may specifically look into the incident of the 27th of January, 2023 which occurred outside the Faculty of Arts and opposite gate No. 4, University of Delhi,” the notification said.

The committee also includes Professor Rama, Principal of Hansraj College, Professor Dinesh Khattar, Principal of Kirorimal College, Professor Ajay Kumar Singh of the Department of Commerce, Professor Manoj Kumar Singh, Joint Proctor, Professor Sanjoy Roy of the Department of Social Work, and Gaje Singh, Chief Security Officer.

Students tried to show the BBC documentary at Delhi University on Friday, but the administration and police interfered to put an end to the plan.

A significant police presence was maintained on the North Campus as 24 National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) members were detained from the Arts Faculty of Delhi University.

The police were called, according to the university, to ensure peace and order because “outsiders” were allegedly attempting to view the documentary.
