New Delhi, Nov.27: The top brass of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are expected to meet on Saturday to discuss the viability of India’s tour of South Africa, which has been postponed due to concerns about the new SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1529 detected in South Africa, Hong Kong, Israel, and Botswana.
Between December 17 and January 26, India will play three Tests, as many ODIs, and four T20Is in South Africa. Following the conclusion of the ongoing two-Test series against New Zealand at home, the senior national men’s squad was scheduled to depart for the Rainbow Nation.
An India A squad led by Priyank Panchal is currently playing an unofficial test series in Bloemfontein. The India A team has already completed a four-day match and will play two more matches in South Africa before returning home on December 9.
The new Covid-19 variant, in particular, has put the ongoing cricket match between Netherlands-South Africa in South Africa in jeopardy. With players voicing their worries, a definitive decision on whether or not to continue the series is expected by Sunday.
The BCCI’s senior brass is slated to convene at this time, and the cricket board’s concern for the players’ well-being is a major priority.
