Kolkata, June 13: The West Bengal assembly passed a bill on Monday to replace Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as chancellor of all state-run universities with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The state government made the decision on May 26, and the West Bengal Cabinet expanded its decision to name Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee chancellor of all state-run universities to include all state-aided universities earlier this month.
The law was introduced in the state assembly’s monsoon session and passed on June 13.
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has had run-ins with the state administration over nominations of vice-chancellors throughout universities, prompting the decision to replace him with CM Banerjee as Chancellor.
Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar had previously claimed that the state administration had appointed multiple Vice-Chancellors without the permission of Raj Bhavan. Governor Dhankhar claimed earlier this year that the vice chancellors of 25 universities were chosen without the Chancellor’s consent.
