Bengaluru, Sept 6: Heavy rains that have exposed the harm caused by unplanned development in the rapidly growing city have left some areas of Bengaluru under water.
Notably, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the state government will release Rs 300 crores to deal with the emergency situation. An additional Rs 300 crores has been earmarked for other flood-affected districts in Karnataka.
Moreover, schools and colleges have declared a holiday due to waterlogging in major parts of the city. However, offices continue to function but several people were seen using tractors to make their way through the waterlogged roads.
Due to the heavy rainfall, powers cuts were reported in several areas. Also, water supply to some localities has been disrupted after a pumphouse in Mandya was flooded. CM said that the pumphouse is being cleaned. He added that 8,000 borewells would supply water in affected areas. Moreover, in areas with no borewells, water will be supplied through tankers.
Notably, the flooding of the IT hub for the second time in a week has brought into limelight the consequences of unplanned urbanisation. The Bengaluru civic body identified encroachment on over 500 storm water drains that have now almost drowned the city.
According to CM, a total of 430 houses have been completely damaged in the floods and another 2,188 have suffered partial damage. Moreover, around 225 km of roads, bridges, culverts and electric poles have also been damaged.
