Bengaluru: In a witty response to the recent controversy surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra’s remarks on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, a Bengaluru resident has invited him to host his next stand-up show under the infamous, long-delayed Ejipura flyover.
The suggestion came via a post on social media platform X, where Kamra had shared his refusal to apologise after his parody act referred to Shinde as a gaddar (traitor). Reacting to the post, Bengaluru-based Aashay Sachdeva wrote, “Can you host the next show under Ejipura Flyover?”—a sarcastic jab that resonated with many frustrated city commuters.
A Civic Joke With A Message
The 2.5-kilometre Ejipura flyover project, under construction since 2017, has become a symbol of urban development delays in Bengaluru. Multiple missed deadlines and halted progress have left citizens exasperated, with daily traffic snarls adding to their woes. The online remark cleverly used Kamra’s satirical style to draw attention to the long-standing issue.
The invitation came shortly after Kamra joked that his next performance could be held at Elphinstone Bridge in Mumbai—another structure known more for controversy than utility—“in need of speedy demolition,” he quipped.
Backdrop Of The Controversy
Kamra’s original comment, made during a recent stand-up act, drew ire from Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) supporters who stormed Mumbai’s Habitat Studio, vandalised property, and forced the venue to shut down temporarily. The studio later clarified that it did not endorse Kamra’s views and expressed concern about being unfairly targeted for content created by independent artists.
Despite political backlash, Kamra remained unapologetic, maintaining that satire and dissent are essential components of a functioning democracy.
