New Delhi, June 20: Following a demand for a Bharat Bandh against the military recruiting plan Agnipath by some organisations, significant traffic congestion was seen on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway on Monday.

As Delhi Police checked automobiles on the motorway near the Sarhaul border, there was a tremendous traffic bottleneck. The organisations have urged that the programme be repealed.

Today in Jantar Mantar in Delhi, opposition parties such as the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party will organise rallies against the Agnipath scheme. Prohibitory orders have been issued in Faridabad and Noida, prohibiting gatherings of four or more people.

During the past four days, protests have erupted in several states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Telangana, against the Centre’s Agnipath scheme, which involves the recruitment of soldiers aged 17.5 to 21 years into the armed forces for a four-year period, followed by compulsory retirement without gratuity or pension benefits for the majority.

In other regions of the country, the protests have turned violent, resulting in the cancellation of at least 483 trains on Sunday. The administration has maintained its stance on the project. Yesterday, the three military services released a comprehensive enrollment schedule under the new policy.
