Washington: During a recent phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden raised concerns about the safety of people in Bangladesh and the future of its democratic institutions. The White House disclosed these details, highlighting the shared concerns between the two leaders regarding recent developments in Bangladesh.
White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby, speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, confirmed that President Biden and PM Modi discussed the situation in Bangladesh during their conversation. “The president made clear his continued concerns about the safety and security of the people in Bangladesh and the future of their democratic institutions,” Kirby stated in response to a question.
While the official statement released by the White House after the call on August 26 did not mention Bangladesh, both PM Modi’s post on X (formerly Twitter) and a statement from his office indicated that the situation in Bangladesh was indeed a topic of discussion.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), “The two leaders expressed their shared concern over the situation in Bangladesh. They emphasized the restoration of law and order and ensuring the safety and security of minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.”
In his post on X, PM Modi reiterated these points, stating, “We also discussed the situation in Bangladesh and stressed on the need for early restoration of normalcy, and ensuring the safety and security of minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh.”
The conversation between the two leaders underscores the ongoing international attention to the situation in Bangladesh, focusing on the protection of its citizens and the preservation of democratic principles.
