Bihar caste census reveals OBC, EBC constitute 63% of state’s population

Patna, Oct 2: The Bihar government revealed caste survey data on Monday. According to the data, which could have an impact on the Lok Sabha elections next year, the Other Backward Caste (OBC) and Extremely Backward Class (EBC) together make up 63% of the state’s population.

At a press conference in the state capital Patna, the report of the Bihar caste-based survey were announced.

“The extremely backward class is 36.01 per cent, the general category is 15.52 per cent and the Other Backward Caste (OBC) is 27 per cent,” Vivek Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary said.

The stats show that 1.68 per cent of the state’s population is made up of Scheduled Tribes and 19.65 per cent is made up of Scheduled Castes.

According to the data, Bihar’s population is made up of 81.99 per cent Hindus, 17.7 per cent Muslims, 0.05 per cent Christians, 0.01 per cent Sikhs, 0.08 per cent Buddhists, and 0.12 per cent adherents of other religions.

As per the data, Yadavs, the largest OBC group, make up 14.27 per cent of the state’s population.

The Kushwaha community accounts for 4.27 per cent of the population, while the Kurmi community makes up 2.87 per cent, as per the caste survey.

More than 13 crore people live in Bihar as a whole.
