Calcutta, March 25: The investigation into the violence in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, in which eight people were killed allegedly in retaliation for the murder of local All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Bhadu Sheikh, was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday by the Calcutta High Court.
Earlier, the Court had started a suo motu case to look into the matter on Wednesday, and it had reserved its decision on Thursday after hearing voluminous evidence.
On Friday, a bench consisting of Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj ruled that the ongoing investigation should be transferred to the CBI in the interest of justice and in light of the facts of the case. On the next date of hearing, April 7, the CBI has been ordered to provide a progress report.
