Ranchi, April 2: The students of Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra in Ranchi temporarily suspended their agitation on Friday evening after the BIT administration assured their open meeting with the Vice-Chancellor about their demand.

The BIT campus witnessed a massive protest of students against the decision of the BIT administration to hold an offline examination. The protest has been going on since Friday morning when over 500 students assembled at the Upper Lawn in front of the main building of the BIT.

“We were told that the VC sir is out of campus and he is set to return on Sunday after which he will hold an open session with us on Sunday to know our views and problems we are set to face in the offline mode of examination. We were told that a notification will be issued in this regard by 3 PM on Saturday. If the officials don’t meet their promise then we will start agitation from Sunday,” said a student.

After the lockdown due to the Covid 19, their classes were held online. Last month their offline classes were resumed and students are now returning to campus. In between, BIT announced holding their offline examination from April 25. Students demanded that since their classes were held online the examination should also be taken online.  They said that Banaras Hindu University, IIT, and ISM Dhanbad also have announced plans to hold examinations online.

They said that it was not possible for them to do a revision of study materials in the form of over thousands of slides and PowerPoints. During the online classes, they were given a huge volume of materials for class study which doesn’t happen during offline classes.

To press for their demand students refused to attend their classes and labs remained vacant till the BIT administration considered their demand favourably. The main gate of the institute and the building have been closed and the entry of students here has been restricted.
