Ranchi, May 9: A criminal shot one of the booth presidents of BJP, Rantu Mahto, to death at Jima-Chatakpur, a village about 40km from Ranchi under the Kudu police station area of Lohardaga district.

The incident took place at 2 am on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday when a man barged into the house of Mahto when he was sleeping with his grandson and shot at his temple and escaped.

After family members heard the firing sound, they rushed and took the injured to a local hospital, from where he was referred to RIMS. But before Mahto could reach RIMS, he died.

Police detained three persons in this connection. Primary investigation suggests land dispute as the reason behind the incident.

Superintendent of police of the district R Ramkumar was not available for his comment on the matter.
