Mandi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut stirred controversy once again after she suggested that the three farm laws, which were repealed following mass protests, should be reinstated. Amid growing criticism from the Opposition, the BJP distanced itself from her statements on Tuesday night, emphasizing that Ranaut is not authorized to speak on behalf of the party regarding policy matters.
In a video message, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia clarified that Ranaut’s remarks on the farm bills were her personal views and did not reflect the party’s official stance. “Kangana Ranaut is not authorized to make such statements on behalf of BJP, and we disapprove of this statement,” he said.
Responding to the BJP’s clarification, Ranaut acknowledged that her opinions on the farm laws were personal. “Absolutely, my views on Farmers Laws are personal and they don’t represent party’s stand on those Bills. Thanks,” she posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Earlier, the actor-turned-politician expressed her belief that the three farm laws should be reintroduced, even if the statement might be controversial. The laws, initially passed in 2020 and repealed in 2021 after extensive farmer protests, remain a sensitive political issue.
Opposition’s Reaction
Ranaut’s comments drew sharp criticism from Congress leaders. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja labeled her as “habitually controversial” and even questioned her mental stability, accusing her of creating unnecessary controversies that ultimately benefit the BJP.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate and media head Pawan Khera also weighed in, accusing the BJP of double-dealing with farmers. Shrinate shared a video of Ranaut’s statement, reiterating that more than 750 farmers lost their lives during the protests against the laws, vowing to prevent their return. Khera, meanwhile, remarked that Ranaut’s statements reflected the BJP’s “real thinking.”
Previous Controversies
This isn’t the first time the BJP has distanced itself from Ranaut’s remarks. Last month, the party disapproved of her comments about the farmers’ movement and directed her to avoid making statements on policy matters. Ranaut previously claimed that the farmer protests were part of a conspiracy to create a “Bangladesh-like situation” in India, which drew widespread criticism.
About the Farm Laws
The three farm laws—Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act—were repealed by Parliament in November 2021, after widespread protests by farmers that began in late 2020.
