Jamshedpur, May 24: Concerned with the increasing criminal activities in the steel city, a group of BJP activists on Tuesday demonstrated in front of the senior SP office demanding a concerted initiative against the drug menace.

The saffron brigade maintained that the sale of narcotic drug ‘brown sugar’ is rampant in the city, especially in the Mango area and the police are doing a little in curbing the menace which is the root of the increasing criminal activities here.

Led by local BJP leader Neeraj Singh, a delegation of the party met senior SP M Tamil Vanan at the latter’s office.  They submitted a memorandum and demanded actions against the perpetrators involved in the smuggling and sale of the dangerous drugs.

The delegates warned Tamil Vanan that if the sale of brown sugar continues unabated, then the situation here may assume an alarming proposition as it has happened in Punjab.

In the memorandum, the saffron brigade has remanded the senior police officer to take stern action against the illicit drug traders and if necessary get their houses razed by using bulldozers like the UP administration is doing against the drug smuggler in that state.

Later speaking to the newsmen, the BJP leader Neeraj Singh said that criminal activities caused by “brown sugar” are being committed in the city on levels – first due to disputes cropped up among drug peddlers and secondly the drug addicts.

“While the drug-peddlers resort to criminal acts like abduction and murder over a monetary dispute between themselves, the youngsters who are getting drug addicts tend to commit thefts and snatching to arrange money for procuring the drugs for consumption, ” Singh said.

Accused to the BJP leader, till the year 2019, the sale of brown sugar was a non-existent affair in Jamshedpur, but within the past two years, the dangerous drug is available in almost every locality of the steel city.

Significantly, the senior SP, M Tamil Vanan while responding to queries by this website recently observed that the sale of brown sugar is on the rise in the steel city because it is a lucrative business.

“Here in Jamshedpur lady drug-peddlers are more active in the trade. We have arrested several ladies from the areas like Mango and Sitaramdera in the recent past. But as we do not have an adequate number of lady cops here, the menacing act of “brown sugar” sale is on the rise, ” Vanan claimed.
