Mumbai: The suspense surrounding Maharashtra’s new government intensified as the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance edges closer to finalising the Chief Minister while resolving power-sharing disagreements among allies. Caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, reportedly recovering from illness, is expected back in Mumbai later on Sunday, amid speculation about his role in the new dispensation.
Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, is pushing for key portfolios, including the Deputy Chief Minister’s post, Home Ministry, and retention of its nine existing ministries, including the industries and urban development portfolios. Meanwhile, BJP leader Raosaheb Danve hinted that the new Chief Minister’s name has been finalised, with an official announcement imminent.
BJP Likely to Take CM Post
Sources suggest Devendra Fadnavis, widely seen as the frontrunner, is set to take charge as Chief Minister, while Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) may secure Deputy CM positions. Despite this, power-sharing disagreements have delayed the government formation, even as BJP Maharashtra chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced that the oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for December 5 at Azad Maidan, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend.
Shinde’s Role in Question
Eknath Shinde’s sudden departure to his native village in Satara amidst the ongoing negotiations raised speculation about his dissatisfaction with the BJP’s decision-making. Shinde, who reportedly fell ill during his stay, is said to be recovering and expected to return to Mumbai to participate in discussions.
Key Developments
•The Mahayuti allies—BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP—secured a landslide victory in the assembly elections, collectively winning 230 out of 288 seats.
•The BJP, the largest partner, won 132 seats, while Shiv Sena and NCP secured 57 and 41 seats, respectively.
•Ajit Pawar of the NCP confirmed that the BJP will name the Chief Minister, with Deputy CM roles reserved for the other two allies.
Opposition Criticism
The delay in government formation has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray called the delay an “insult to Maharashtra” and questioned the alliance’s inability to make decisions promptly.
The Mahayuti allies are expected to meet on Monday to finalise the cabinet portfolios and address remaining disagreements, paving the way for the new government’s swearing-in ceremony next week.
