Panaji, March 21: After today’s legislature party meeting, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to announce the name of Goa’s next chief minister, putting an end to speculation.
Pramod Sawant, a BJP leader and temporary chief minister, is the clear front-runner for the role of chief minister, but other possibilities have emerged after the BJP delayed announcing the name for days following the election results.
Vishwajit Rane, a BJP MLA and former state health minister, and Himachal Pradesh governor Rajendra Arlekar’s names are also being mentioned.
In four of the five state assembly elections, the BJP did not name a candidate for chief minister. Because to Pushkar Singh Dhami’s loss and Sawant’s narrow win, the names of the next chief ministers of Uttarakhand and Goa are still up in the air.
Sawant and Rane met with union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday, fueling rumours of infighting inside the Goa BJP over the chief ministerial position.
The Goa BJP will have a legislative party meeting today, after which the governor will be asked to submit a claim to form the government. The new government’s swearing-in ceremony could take place between March 23 and 25.
