New Delhi: Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary election has delivered a sweeping victory to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), defeating the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated BNP chief Tarique Rahman, calling the result a reflection of the Bangladeshi people’s strong trust in his leadership.
Modi Calls It a Mandate of Public Trust
In a message posted on social media platform X, PM Modi described the BNP’s win as a decisive mandate. He stated that India will continue to support a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh, and praised the outcome as proof of public confidence in Tarique Rahman’s leadership.
First Major Election After Hasina’s Exit
This election was Bangladesh’s first major national vote after the political upheaval that led to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country and taking refuge in India. The polls were widely seen as a turning point for Bangladesh’s political future.
BNP Alliance Wins Two-Thirds Majority
Votes were cast on Thursday, and counting began the same evening. Reports suggest that the BNP-led alliance has won 209 seats, securing a two-thirds majority in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad. The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance has reportedly won 70 seats.
Party Appeals for Prayer, Not Celebration
After the victory, BNP also congratulated the nation and urged supporters not to hold celebrations. Instead, the party asked its workers to offer Friday prayers across the country and remember former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
