Guwahati, Assam – The body of an eight-year-old boy, who fell into a stormwater drain during heavy rain on Thursday, was recovered by rescue teams on Sunday. The boy’s body was found approximately 4 km downstream in the Rajgarh area, police reported.
The tragic incident occurred when Abhinash Sarkar slipped off his father’s scooter and into the open drain in hilly Jyotinagar. His parents identified his body at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after rescue teams retrieved it.
According to a police officer, rescue agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), conducted an extensive search operation using various machinery and sniffer dogs. The boy’s father also participated in the search, tirelessly wading through the drain and debris for three days.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the search site on Saturday to offer his support to the family and assured them of all necessary measures to find their son. Following the discovery of Abhinash’s body, Sarma extended his deepest condolences to the grieving family.
“HCM Dr @himantabiswa has expressed his deepest condolences to Shri Hiralal Sarkar and family on their tragic loss. HCM also thanked the NDRF, SDRF, Assam Police, and District authorities for their search efforts,” the Chief Minister’s Office tweeted.
The community is mourning the loss of young Abhinash, and the authorities are urged to take preventive measures to avoid such accidents in the future.
