Mumbai, Jan 17: The Bombay High Court on Monday denied Nitesh Rane, a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and the son of Union Minister Narayan Rane, anticipatory release in an attempted murder case.
The order was pronounced by Justice CV Bhadang.
Rane, a BJP MLA, has been charged with being the primary conspirator in the attempted murder of a Shiv Sena member on December 18, 2021, in Maharashtra’s Kankavli district. After his anticipatory bail application was denied by the Sindhudurg Sessions Court, he went to the High Court. According to Rane’s filing, the FIR was lodged against him because he allegedly mocked Shiv Sena leader and State Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray.
He went on to say that the delay in filing the FIR was evidence of this.
Rane had been participating with the investigation and had appeared for recording of remarks, according to Pradhan. He claimed that following a four-hour interview, Rane was permitted to go home, but that he was then alerted of a probable arrest, prompting him to file the current plea.
Special counsel Sudeep Pasbola, opposing the motion, informed the Court that Rane met with his close associate Sachin Satpute to display a photo of the victim in the case, Santosh Parab, who had reportedly been disparaging Rane and his family, including his father, Union Minister Narayan Rane.
Satpute was allegedly urged by Rane to assault Parab in order to scare him into not speaking out against his family.
Pasbola told the court that after co-accused Sachin Satpute was apprehended by the Delhi police, Rane and the other Maharashtra suspects vanished.
The police were awaiting the results of forensic examination on the seized phones of the arrested suspects.
During the hearing, Pasbola also told the Court that the prosecution had circumstantial evidence to back up their case, and that they needed Rane’s custody to finish the investigation.
Meanwhile, the anticipatory bail of another co-accused Manish Dalvi was allowed by the Court.
