New Delhi: Amid the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s picturesque Pahalgam, two distinct narratives emerged—one of terror and violence, and another of heroism and humanity. On Tuesday afternoon, when terrorists opened fire in the serene meadows of Baisaran, killing 26 tourists, local Kashmiris became the heroes who risked their lives to save visitors.
Ponywallah Who Sacrificed Himself
Among the tales of heroism is the poignant story of Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a 30-year-old pony ride operator who lost his life confronting the terrorists. Shah bravely attempted to disarm a terrorist to protect tourists, tragically receiving multiple fatal gunshots. His selfless act turned him into a martyr, whose funeral in Hapatnard village saw thousands, including former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, paying respects.
“Angels Sent By God”
Tourists recounted how locals played a pivotal role in their survival. Asavari Jagdale, who lost her father and uncle in the attack, described a pony ride operator as “an angel sent by God” for helping her family escape safely. Another driver continued supporting her even after she left Srinagar, offering help emotionally and financially.
A Guide’s Courage Saves 11 Lives
Nazakat Ahmed Shah, cousin of the martyr Adil Shah, saved a group of 11 tourists, including three children. When gunfire erupted, Nazakat took quick action, escorting the tourists safely down the dangerous terrain to Pahalgam, shielding children from the violence.
Grateful tourists, including Arvind Agrawal and Kuldeep Sthapak, publicly acknowledged Nazakat’s courage, highlighting his selflessness and humanity amidst chaos.
Guide Carrying Child Goes Viral
Another face of compassion was tourist guide Sajad Ahmad Bhat, whose videos of carrying a child on his back to safety went viral. Bhat and other locals ferried injured tourists to hospitals on ponies and their backs. Expressing deep remorse over the attack, Bhat emphasized unity and said, “We want to tell all Indians that we stand with them… We are all Indians.”
Local Hotel Staff Prevent Further Tragedies
Several tourists credited locals for their quick thinking and alertness. A family from Maharashtra was stopped by hotel staff from stepping out, saving them from potentially fatal consequences. Another couple, Sakshi and Krishna Lolgefrom Nanded, were swiftly escorted to safety by locals, narrowly escaping the attack.
Through their bravery and compassion, the people of Pahalgam became beacons of hope, proving humanity’s resilience in the face of terror.
