Businessman dies after arrest by police, relatives demand enquiry

Hazaribag, Jan 15: The death of businessman Sunil Gupta under mysterious circumstances has raised fingers on the Sadar police. Notably, the businessman’s wife and son have accused police of brutality resulting in Gupta’s death.

Barkagaon MLA of congress, Amba Prasad reached the Sadar police station late Saturday night as the relatives of Gupta protested outside. MLA Prasad talked to police officers and demanded an impartial inquiry and suspension of policemen whose names have surfaced in the case.

Sources said that the police team reached the Munka Bagicha apartment of Gupta to arrest him in a case related to the purchase of some essential commodities late in the evening on Saturday.

Soon after the police left with Gupta, the family was informed of his being injured, said his wife. She said she found her husband lying unconscious and severely injured at the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College.

“The doctors told me that his backbone was damaged. We rushed him to Hzb Aarogyam, a private hospital but he was declared brought dead,” she added.

With relatives and residents of Munka Bagicha locality gheraoed Sadar police station, officials have claimed that the allegation of Gupta being beaten by them is baseless. He tried to jump from the terrace of his house after seeing the police and fell down resulting in injury, added an officer.

However, the relatives are not accepting this argument and have demanded action. Upon being informed, MLA Amba Prasad reached there and assured the protestors of justice.

She further met DSP Arif Ekram with the family at the Sadar police station, who assured her of the inquiry in this case. “We will take up an inquiry to reach to the facts of this case,” he said. Amba demanded the suspension of policemen whose names had appeared in this case. Police officials have said that action will be taken once the inquiry report is released.
