New Delhi, Nov 3: The attorney for fugitive billionaire Vijay Mallya asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to be released from representing Mallya in a case since he hasn’t heard from the liquor magnate, who is currently residing in the United Kingdom.

“As per my information, Mallya resides in the United Kingdom but he is not communicating with me now and all I have is his email address. Since he is not traceable and not appearing anywhere in India, I should be relieved from representing him,” EC Agarwala, the advocate-on-record for Mallya in the apex court, told the bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli.

The court’s bench gave the attorney permission to proceed with the case’s dismissal procedure and instructed him to give the court registry Mallya’s current residential address and email address.

Mallya’s petitions about a financial dispute with the State Bank of India were being heard by the court.

Mallya was given a four-month prison term earlier this year in July by the apex court for contempt of court for disobeying its orders. The court also ordered the government to take action to ensure Mallya’s presence in India.

Mallya has not yet made an appearance in India to begin serving his sentence in the contempt case, despite being the subject of extradition proceedings in the UK brought by the government of India.
