Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case has made a shocking revelation, claiming that false records related to the case were created at Tala Police Station. The CBI informed a local court in Kolkata that it has obtained CCTV footage from the police station, which has been sent for forensic examination.
This development comes after the CBI interrogated Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station at the time of the incident. Mondal, along with Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former chief of RG Kar Hospital, has been arrested and is currently in CBI custody.
Prime Suspect Sanjay Roy Arrested
In addition to Mondal and Ghosh, the CBI has arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, who was seen on CCTV entering the room where the junior doctor’s body was found, hours before it was discovered. Roy’s delayed arrest and the alleged tampering of evidence have raised serious concerns about a cover-up.
Mondal, though not accused of the rape or murder, is suspected of playing a role in the destruction of evidence. The CBI is investigating a “criminal conspiracy” between Mondal, Ghosh, and Roy, citing an unnecessary delay in seizing Roy’s clothes, which could have contaminated material evidence.
Alleged Collusion Between Mondal and Ghosh
The CBI has flagged a possible nexus between Mondal and Ghosh, referring to frequent phone calls between the two during the investigation. Mondal’s lawyer, however, argued that it was normal for them to communicate given the gravity of the case.
The CBI is also scrutinizing a 14-hour delay between the discovery of the body and the filing of the police case. The agency has accused the hospital administration, led by Ghosh, of failing to immediately inform the police, which delayed the FIR.
Protests and Ongoing Investigations
The case has ignited protests among junior doctors, who partially resumed duties after a 40-day strike demanding justice for their colleague. They have accused officials, including the Health Secretary, of involvement in the case.
Meanwhile, the CBI continues its investigation, including questioning Birupaksha Biswas, a doctor allegedly close to Ghosh. Biswas is suspected of having ties to the North Bengal lobby, which has reportedly threatened medical students in the past.
The CBI’s investigation is ongoing, with several key figures in custody and further evidence under scrutiny.
