Ranchi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Income Tax Deputy Commissioner Vijendra and a private individual named Dinesh Kumar Agrawal on charges of manipulating the faceless assessment system. The arrests come after a complaint alleging irregularities in the system meant to ensure transparency and anonymity in tax assessments.
Faceless Assessment System Compromised
The CBI had registered an FIR based on the complaint and began a detailed probe. On February 6, the agency conducted raids across Delhi, Mumbai, Champaran, Bengaluru, and other locations. During these raids, incriminating documents and evidence were found indicating that income tax officials, in collusion with certain individuals, were tampering with assessments for personal gain.
The faceless assessment system was introduced by the Central Government to eliminate direct interaction between taxpayers and tax officers, ensuring a more transparent and corruption-free process. However, evidence gathered by the CBI suggests that despite this anonymity, conspiracies were being hatched to influence assessments and derive illegal benefits.
IRS Officer from 2015 Batch Arrested
Following confirmation of wrongdoing, the CBI arrested Vijendra, a 2015 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, on Friday. Dinesh Kumar Agrawal, a private individual alleged to be a key accomplice, was also arrested. Both accused are expected to be produced before the Special CBI Court soon.
