Kolkata: A special court in Kolkata on Thursday granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) permission to conduct polygraph tests on Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with four other doctors connected to the case of a trainee doctor’s rape and murder.

The victim, a 31-year-old trainee doctor, was brutally assaulted and killed on August 9. Her body was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital, triggering widespread outrage and protests.

The court’s approval came after the CBI requested the lie detector tests as part of their ongoing investigation into the case. The four other doctors set to undergo the polygraph tests were colleagues of the victim and had been with her on the night of the crime. They had also shared a meal with her prior to the tragic incident.

According to CBI sources, the decision to conduct these tests aims to verify the accuracy of the statements provided by these individuals during the investigation. Polygraph tests, commonly known as lie detector tests, are used to determine the truthfulness of a person’s testimony by monitoring physiological responses.

In a related development, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who had resigned as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 12, had his transfer to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital revoked amid the ongoing protests. His resignation followed the public outcry over the heinous crime.

The investigation continues as the CBI works to uncover the full details surrounding the case, with the polygraph tests expected to shed further light on the involvement of those being tested. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the medical community and the public, raising serious concerns about safety and accountability within healthcare institutions.
