New Delhi, May 17: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is searching former Union Minister P Chidambaram’s son and Congress Lok Sabha MP Karti Chidambaram’s home and office in Chennai, Mumbai, Odisha, and Delhi.
Around seven locations associated to Karti Chidambaram, his associate Bhaskaraman, and others are reportedly being searched.
According to sources, Karti Chidambaram has been charged with receiving unlawful gratification in a new case filed by the investigating agency. According to sources, the Congress MP took a bribe of Rs 50 lakh in exchange for facilitating the immigration of 250 Chinese nationals for a power plant in Punjab between 2010 and 2014.
The CBI searched Chidambaram’s home at 80 Lodhi Estate in the national capital this morning. According to sources, the CBI team questioned his house workers and took certain papers with them.
Meanwhile, Chidambaram shared a cryptic tweet after the CBI searches at his premises. “I have lost count, how many times has it been? Must be a record,” he said.
Karti Chidambaram is being investigated in multiple incidents, including one involving the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) giving INX Media permission to receive 305 crore in foreign cash while his father, P Chidambaram, was the finance minister.
During the investigation into the INX media case, the agency discovered several papers that led to the discovery of this case.
On May 15, 2017, the CBI filed a corruption complaint in the case. Following that, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a money laundering complaint. Based on a CBI FIR, the economic crimes watchdog also filed a PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) case.
CBI arrested Karti Chidambaram in February 2018, and he was given bail after a month in March.
