Ranchi, Jan 11: The Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE, has scheduled the Class 10 English board exam for February 27, 2023. Over a month is left for the board exams and students are now rigorously preparing for them. With a host of subjects to prepare for, students should comprehend how important it is to prepare for the subject as it is high-scoring and will eventually help students increase their overall percentage.
Here are a few helpful preparation tips from Anuj Verma, a former teacher at a leading coaching institute and now training students at his home, to get the best scores in the upcoming CBSE Class 10 English board exam.
SECTION A: READING SKILLS
Section A or the reading section includes a discursive passage of 400-500 words, a case-based passage (which includes visual inputs, statistical data, chart, etc), and Multiple Choice Questions / Objective Type Questions to assess inference, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and vocabulary.
This section aims to test the student’s ability to read and comprehend a passage as they answer questions related to the given passage. It is a scoring section and students must practice at least 1-2 passages daily. They should carefully read the given passage and understand it before answering the questions. Increasing the reading speed will help students score better.
SECTION B: GRAMMAR AND CREATIVE WRITING SKILLS
Section B, Writing, and Grammar, is set to test the candidate’s writing and grammar skills. The grammar section comprises tenses, modals, subject-verb concord, and reported speech (Commands and request statements, questions, and determiners). Students require extensive practice for the questions based on editing, gap-filling, and narration. Communication in English will facilitate students to improve their grammar.
This section will have short as well as long writing tasks including compositions.
Formal Letter based on a given situation in 100-120 words
Writing an Analytical Paragraph (100-120 words) on a given map / Chart / Graph
One out of two questions is to be answered.
As far as the writing section is concerned, students must practice writing formal letters and analytical paragraphs. They should go through sample writings. Communication in English will facilitate students to improve their grammar.
SECTION C: REFERENCE TO CONTEXT
This section includes one extract out of two from Drama / Prose and one extract out of two from poetry. Additionally, Multiple Choice Questions / Objective Type Questions will be asked to assess inference, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and vocabulary.
Short and Long Answer Questions
Four out of five short answer type questions are to be answered in 40-50 words from the book FIRST FLIGHT and two out of three short answer type questions are to be answered from FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET
One out of two Long Answer Type Questions from FIRST FLIGHT are to be answered in about 100-120 each to assess creativity, imagination, and extrapolation beyond the text and across the texts. This can be a passage-based question taken from a situation/plot from the texts.
One out of two Long Answer Type Questions from FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET on theme or plot involving interpretation, extrapolation beyond the text, and inference or character sketch to be answered in about 100-120 words.
To score well in Section C, based on literature and poems, students must read thoroughly and memorize all the chapters and poems in their books and their corresponding authors and poets. Students should understand how long answers can be framed by attempting previous papers and sample tests to avoid mistakes while drafting the answer.
The boat hasn’t sailed yet. But, students need to remember that English cannot be studied or mastered in a day. Students should practice and revise regularly by reading, listening, writing, and speaking. They should keep writing every answer and anything they read/learn to memorize better, understand what mistakes they are making, and try to improve.
