Ranchi, Jan 12: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is all set to begin the much-awaited Board Exam 2023 on February 15. With the date sheet for classes 10 and 12 out, students are now rigorously preparing for the annual board exam.
As per the CBSE Class 12 datesheet, CBSE will conduct the English board exam on February 24, 2023. Therefore, over one month is left for the English exam. At this point, students are stressed, and need to understand that this subject will help them increase their overall percentage.
Anuj Verma, a former teacher at a leading coaching institute and now training students at his home said, “Scoring well in English requires a rigorous blend of coherence, knowledge, relevance, grammar, and logic. One way to hone these skills is to make a habit of reading newspapers and writing at least one-page analysing of current topics. This way, students can improve their vocabulary and develop a strong command over grammar.”
Verma further shared a few useful preparation tips to bag the best scores in the CBSE English board exam:
SECTION A: READING SKILLS
Reading Comprehension through Unseen Passage
- One unseen passage to evaluate comprehension, interpretation, and inference. The passage may be factual, descriptive or literary. Additionally, one unseen case-Based passage with verbal/visual inputs like statistical data, charts, etc will appear. The combined word limit for both passages will be 700-750 words.
- This section requires careful and thorough reading to ascertain the idea of the passage.
- Arrive at the meaning of difficult words by relating them to the preceding and following sentences.
- Underline relevant words and phrases in the passages which can help you deduce the answer.
- If you are asked to provide a suitable title or heading to the passage, remember the title is hidden either at the beginning or end of the passage.
SECTION B: CREATIVE WRITING SKILLS
This section has short and long writing tasks
- The short writing section contains a Notice of up to 50 words, a Formal/ Informal Invitation, and a Reply of up to 50 words.
- The long writing section has letters based on verbal/visual input, to be answered in approximately 120-150 words. Letter types include applications with reference to a job with bio-data resume, Letters to the editor (giving opinions on issues of public interest).Moreover, Article/ Report Writing with regards descriptive and analytical in nature is asked, based on verbal inputs.
- Follow the formats strictly. Write the value points of the answer before composing the answers. While attempting any questions on a problem-based issue note down the causes, effects, and steps and put them into the proper paragraphs. Avoid repetition, and try using simple vocabulary.
SECTION C:
This section will have a variety of assessment items including MCQ, objective type questions, short answer type questions, and long answer type questions to assess comprehension, analysis, interpretation, and exploration beyond the text.
Reference to the Context:
- One piece of poetry extracts out of two from the book Flamingo and One prose extract out of two from both the books Flamingo and Vistas to assess comprehension, interpretation, and analysis.
- In total, 3 references to context.
- Short answer type questions to be answered in 40-50 words (Prose and Poetry from the book Flamingo), inferential responses through critical reasoning. Five questions out of six should be answered.
- Short answer type questions, from Prose (Vistas). Attempt any 2 out of 3 questions.
- One long answer question from Prose/Poetry (Flamingo), is to be answered in 120-150 words. Questions can be based on incident/ theme/ passage/ extract/ event as reference points to assess extrapolation beyond and across the text. Any 1 out of 2 questions to be done.
- One long type question, based on the chapters from the book Vistas. The questions are framed to assess global comprehension and extrapolation beyond text.
- Read all the poems and prose texts thoroughly. Underline important phrases and use them as keywords in answers. If in doubt take the help of your teacher and solve previous year’s papers from reference books. Stick to the word limit as both preciseness and brevity are important for short answers. For the long answers, write the value points in the margin before framing the answers.
