New Delhi, Jan 1: Starting today, food aggregators such as Swiggy and Zomato will be required to collect and deposit GST at a rate of 5%, broadening the tax base by making food suppliers who are currently outside the GST threshold liable to GST when offered through these online platforms.
Restaurants that are GST-registered are currently collecting and submitting the tax.
In addition, starting January 1, cab aggregators like Ola and Uber will be required to collect a 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) for hiring 2 and 3 wheeler cars. In addition, from today, any footwear, regardless of price, will be subject to a 12% tax.
These are just a few of the many changes to the GST system that took effect in the new year of 2022.
To combat avoidance, the GST law has been revised to stipulate that the input tax credit will only be accessible once it appears in the tax payer’s GSTR 2B (buy return). The 5% provisional credit, which was previously allowed under GST rules, would no longer be available after January 1, 2022.
