New Delhi, April 1: Union minister Jitendra Singh on Friday introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha to provide a regulatory framework for India’s research activities in the Antarctic.
The Indian Antarctic Bill 2022 seeks to establish national safeguards for the Antarctic environment, as well as its dependent and linked ecosystems. The bill also attempts to give effect to the Antarctic Treaty, the Antarctic Marine Living Resources Convention, and the Antarctic Treaty Protocol on Environmental Protection.
The Union cabinet had previously approved the need for legislation, but it had not yet been placed to public vote. Following a question made by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi yesterday, the Lok Sabha will also examine the need to encourage sports in India and the government’s efforts in this area.
Notably, the second half of the budget session of the parliament was resumed on March 14 and will conclude on April 8.
