Selection will be done online at all levels and the President will present National Awards to the selected teachers on September 5, on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
Talking about the selection process for this award, officials in the Jharkhand School Education and Literacy Department have said, “After online nomination of teachers, from July 1 to 15, the district and regional level committee will scrutinize the applications and forward them to the state committee headed by the Education Secretary Rajesh Sharma.”
The official claimed that the state level committee will send the recommendation of three teachers to the Center for this award between July 16 and 30. On August 2, the teachers will give their presentation before the National Jury. The final selection process will be completed between August 5 and 16. On August 16, the teachers will be selected for the National Award.
When asked of the criteria for selection of teachers, the education secretary said, “Mostly a teachers’ reputation in the local community, their academic efficiency and desire for its improvement, their genuine interest in and love for children, and their involvement in the social life of the community is considered.”
However, other criteria include that they have at least 15 to 20 years regular teaching experience. Along with this, those who are actually working as teachers/headmasters in recognised primary/middle/high/ higher secondary schools only shall be considered.
Normally retired teachers are not eligible for the award but those teachers who have served a part of the calendar year (at least for four months i.e. upto 30th April in the year to which National Award relates) may be considered if they fulfill all other conditions.
Teachers whose names were recommended last year or before can also be considered again if they are still otherwise eligible and are recommended by the State Government/ Union Territories.
However, para teachers and other teachers working on contract will not be eligible for this award. A condition has also been laid that teachers should not teach private tuitions.
Notably, the Central Government gives this award every year on the occasion of Teacher’s Day. Last year, Manoj Kumar Singh, a teacher of Hindustan Mitra Mandal School, Golmuri, Jamshedpur from Jharkhand had received this award.
