Ranchi: The central government has issued a heatwave alert to all states, urging them to take proactive steps to manage the impact of the soaring temperatures. In an official communication, the government has instructed hospitals to strengthen medical preparedness, especially in view of potential heatstroke cases.

High Temperatures Expected Across India

The advisory warns that most parts of the country are likely to experience extreme heat in the coming days. States have been directed to ensure proper medical arrangements for heatstroke cases and to review fire safety measures in hospitals.

Focus On Vulnerable Groups

According to Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava, the elderly, children, and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable during heatwaves. She recommended that all districts launch awareness campaigns and that local authorities alert street vendors and labourers working under the sun.

Key Instructions To States:

  • Set up Heatstroke Treatment Rooms and ORS Corners in hospitals.

  • Use the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) for real-time surveillance of heat-related illnesses.

  • Conduct fire safety checks and mock drills in hospitals to ensure readiness in case of emergencies.

Emphasis On Prevention And Public Awareness

The letter emphasized the need to sensitize the public and health workers on early symptoms of heat exhaustion and stroke, and to educate communities on preventive measures such as hydration and avoiding outdoor activity during peak hours.

As temperatures continue to rise, the Centre has urged states to remain on high alert, especially in heatwave-prone regions, and to coordinate efforts across departments to minimize health risks and casualties.
