New Delhi, April 19: The Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act 2022 was notified by the Government of India on Tuesday, April 19th, uniting Delhi’s East, South, and North Municipal Corporations into one – to be known as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The government will also select a special officer to carry out the corporation’s tasks.
Notably, the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2022 was passed by the Rajya Sabha two weeks ago on April 5. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, warned the Upper House that the Delhi government was treating three MCDs like children.
“All the three municipal corporations of Delhi are not functioning properly due to the step-motherly behaviour of the AAP party,” Shah had said.
He went on to say that merging three municipal corporations into one was necessary in order for them to function properly.
The Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, is amended by this Act. Earlier, the Delhi Legislative Assembly revised the Act in 2011 to divide the previous Municipal Corporation of Delhi into North, South, and East Delhi Municipal Corporations.
