New Delhi, July 19: The Centre has convened an all-party meeting today to discuss the Sri Lanka crisis. At an all-party conference held here on Sunday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi stated that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar would brief floor leaders of all political parties in both Houses of Parliament.

“On Tuesday, we are calling for another all-party meeting to brief on the Lankan crisis. We have requested Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to hold this briefing,” Joshi said on Sunday.

Sources claim that Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra will likely address the members and discuss the situation in Sri Lanka and the help India has previously provided to the island nation.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and EAM Jaishankar. During their conversation, MK Stalin conveyed his worry about the situation in Sri Lanka and requested permission to provide aid to the island nation, which is going through the severe economic crisis.

Both DMK and AIADMK leaders urged the Centre to step in to help the neighbouring country settle its problem at the all-party meeting on Sunday.

Inflation, a severe lack of fuel and other basic supplies, and political unrest are all contributing to Sri Lanka’s economic and political crises. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, 73, had fled his home on July 9 after protestors barged in, and the Parliament Speaker eventually accepted his resignation. On July 20, the 225-member Parliament will vote to choose the new president.

On Friday, Ranil Wickramasinghe, who had previously announced his resignation as prime minister, was inaugurated as president pro tempore.
